Memoria

Memoria was made during my Sophomore year of pursuing my animation degree. It was made entirely in one semester and was my first time directing and animating a film. This film is a story of nostalgia both in the film itself and behind the scenes.

I was heavily inspired by my time spent on the beach as a child, in both summer and winter, and wanted to play with representing both versions of the environment in the same film. In the film, I decided to do so through a character reminiscing about their childhood.

Since childhood memories tend to have a certain color/sparkle to them, I decided that version of the beach would be summer, and the present would be winter. Thus, the times of year informed the types of clothes the characters wore. But because the film is so short, I needed to make it visually obvious who the main character was when in childhood form, so I ensured she had a similar outfit and silhouette.

In order to add additional contrast between the present and the memory without making things feel inconsistent, I experimented with a reduced frame rate to add to the nostalgic feeling. I actually got the idea to play with the frame rate from the Spider-Verse movies!

While working on this film, I also wanted to get experience working with a team/ as a producer, so I decided to work with a composer, cleanup, and color artists. Working with a team like this meant I had to stay organized and communicative - which, luckily, are two things I am very good at.
